A Brief History of Costa Rican Coffee

Coffee has played a vital role in Costa Rica's history for more than 200 years. Introduced in the late 1700s, coffee quickly became one of the country's most important agricultural products due to Costa Rica's fertile volcanic soil, high elevations, and ideal climate.

In the early 1800s, the government encouraged coffee cultivation by distributing coffee plants to farmers, helping transform coffee into a major economic driver. By the mid-19th century, coffee exports to Europe and North America had earned Costa Rica international recognition for producing high-quality Arabica coffee.

Often referred to as the country's "Golden Bean," coffee helped finance the development of roads, railways, education, and public infrastructure, contributing significantly to Costa Rica's growth and prosperity.

Today, Costa Rica is renowned worldwide for its commitment to quality, sustainable farming practices, and exceptional coffee-growing regions such as Tarrazú, Central Valley, Tres Ríos, and Heredia. The country's coffee industry continues to uphold a tradition of excellence that has been passed down through generations.

At Moka Coffee Distribution, we are proud to share this rich heritage by offering premium Costa Rican coffee that reflects the passion, craftsmanship, and quality that have defined Costa Rican coffee since the beginning.

COFFEE PICKING

Coffee picking is one of the most important and celebrated traditions in Costa Rica's coffee industry. Every year, during the harvest season, skilled coffee pickers carefully hand-select ripe coffee cherries from the coffee plants grown in the country's fertile volcanic regions and mountainous landscapes.

Unlike mechanical harvesting used in some countries, Costa Rican coffee is primarily harvested by hand. This method allows pickers to select only the cherries that have reached peak ripeness, ensuring superior quality and flavor. The careful selection process is one of the reasons Costa Rican coffee is recognized worldwide for its exceptional taste and consistency.

The coffee harvest season typically runs from November through March, although harvest times may vary depending on the region and elevation. Areas such as Tarrazú, Central Valley, Tres Ríos, Heredia, and Brunca are among the country's most renowned coffee-producing regions.

Once harvested, the coffee cherries are transported to processing mills where the beans are extracted, washed, dried, and prepared for roasting. This meticulous process helps preserve the unique characteristics that make Costa Rican coffee highly sought after around the world.

Coffee picking is more than just a harvest—it's a tradition that has been passed down through generations and remains an essential part of Costa Rica's culture, economy, and agricultural heritage.

At Moka Coffee Distribution, we proudly support the craftsmanship and dedication of Costa Rican coffee growers whose hard work ensures the exceptional quality found in every cup.
